Artist Statement

Photography was born from using historic tools (Camera Obscura and Camera Lucida) with new discoveries in chemistry. In that tradition I too am fascinated with combining the old with the new, though my approach uses modern technology with the historic processes developed at photography's inception. Gum Bichromate printing was the first process proven to be permenant in the 1850's and it brought multiple colors to photography for the first time. In the following 150 years, the process has remained the same, but with modern technology and contemporary pigments the results are remarkably different. Through digital photography I can combine and edit images then seperate colors and print negatives that were unavailable to earlier photographers. And by using contemporary pigments created with mica I create prints that change color and sparkle in the light.
